Linewize Filter’s Digital Distraction Report identifies students who aren’t focused on their learning material or engaged within their learning environment. The Report compares students over a period and looks for users who are:
- trying to access blocked content more often than average, or
- generating more network traffic than you would expect for that peer group.
The Digital Distraction Report is an optional feature. Contact your Linewize Success or Account Manager for access.
Before you begin
Before using the Digital Distraction Report, complete the following:
- Configure an Authentication Service in Linewize Filter.
Important
Configure groups by year level to generate accurate reports. The Digital Distraction Report will not work correctly if you set up groups with multiple-year levels. Linewize Filter compares students’ online usage from similar groups for accurate insights.
- Configure Users and Groups in Linewize Filter.
- Create Content Filtering Policies that block all these themes and categories:
- Malware and Hacking
- Mature and Explicit
- Gaming
- Social Networking (category of Social Media and Communication)
- Live Streaming (category of Arts and Entertainment)
- Shopping (category of Shopping and Travel)
- Configure the School Calendar in Linewize Filter. The calendar sets the difference between on-school and off-school reporting.
- (Optional) Configure the Outside of School Hours > Include activity outside school hours in reporting in Linewize Filter to make reporting data available outside school hours.
Important
If outside of school hours reporting is not turned on, the Non-School Hours Time Period will not display results.
Access the Digital Distraction Report
Only Filtering/Reporting Administrators or Owner/Global Administrators can access the Digital Distraction Report.
- In Linewize Filter, go to Reports > Digital Distraction.
- Select From Date.
Enter a new start and end date or select from the presets.
Important
The report only shows data from the past three months. While you can select an earlier date range or preset, reports will not return data older than three months from the current date. If the report displays an error message, select a shorter date range within the last three months.
- Select a Time Period.
- Select Group Name > is any value or select a group from the dropdown.
- Select the Load icon.
How Linewize Filter identifies distracted students
The Digital Distraction Report reviews student activity and rates students on a scale of 0 to 8, with 8 being the highest, using three factors:
| Factor | Description | Point Value |
|---|---|---|
| High usage | The student has an above-average network usage. | 1-2 |
| High blocks | The student has an above-average blocked access attempts. | 1-2 |
| Blocked category hits | The student is trying to access sites related to VPN, Gambling, Gaming, Social Media, Streaming Media, and Shopping more than average. | 1 per category |
Low data users over Date Range
The Low data users category lists students with low network usage, suggesting they have also tried to access or use a VPN. It does not add points to the distracted student rating but may help you identify students trying to circumvent your filtering policies.
