User Roles in School Manager

School Manager has a number of different roles you can assign to users that grant access to a different set of features, functions, and data in School Manager. Several roles also allow access to Classwize if your teachers are using it to manage online content and devices in their classrooms. You can also add multiple roles to a single user to give them access to a combination of functions.

Warning

You should only give your users the most limited role(s) that will meet their needs for access. Only grant Owner / Global Administrator and other high-access roles to the people who need it.

User Roles

The table below outlines the Roles and Responsibilities

Roles & Responsibilities	Description
Reporting/Pastoral Care Administrator	Monitors and reports on students’ school network activities. Important By default, this role can access all features in Statistics and Cyber Safety. The Owner/Global Administrator can limit this role to reporting on specific users or groups.
Configuration Administrator	Manages the daily configuration of School Manager. Can maintain configuration of network devices, authentication services, users, groups, and objects. Important The Configuration Administrator role can purge synced users and purge local users.
Guest Configuration	Manages guest account access only. Recommended for physical networks using Captive Portal.
WAN and Firewall Administrator	Manages core networking configuration (Firewall, WAN, VPNs, and rate limiting). Warning Do not assign this role to a School Manager user unless instructed to do so by Linewize Support.
Classroom Administrator	Manages access to student data and reports, all content filtering functions, and all daily configuration items.
Classroom Ed-Tech Manager	Manages access to see and run Classwize reports on student activities, and to create and manage Classwize classrooms.
Cloud Only Filter Administrator	Manages content filtering, connections to a SIS, and directory services. Can access most student data and reporting features.
Cloud DNS Filter Administrator	Manages the configuration and use of a FamilyZone DNS resolver for the filtering of school-managed devices. This role is only for schools with a Cloud DNS subscription and is combined with the Owner/Global Administrator role.
Community Administrator	Manages the configuration of Linewize Community with access to parent management, parent data upload and community configuration.
Owner/Global Administrator	Administrator access to almost all features in School Manager. The only role allowed to access the Debugging menu and grant access to other users. Important Restrict the number of users you give this role to.
Filtering/Reporting Administrator	Manages all aspects of content filtering and reporting.
Filtering Administrator	Manages filtering rules. Adds, edits or removes content filtering rules, generates Classwize bypass codes, creates email reports, and safe search settings.

Special Scenarios

Pastoral Care and Counseling Role

You can limit pastoral care and counselors to specific groups or users they are responsible for. The Users and Groups fields will be displayed if you select the Reporting/Pastoral Care Administrator.

Common Role Combinations

Most users only need to be given a single role to access the features and information they need to do their jobs. However, some users may need to be assigned to multiple roles to meet your specific needs.
