Integrating Microsoft Entra ID sign-in with a Captive Portal

Integrating Microsoft Entra ID (formally Azure AD) authentication into your Captive Portal enhances security and simplifies user sign-in. This article walks you through the steps to set up Microsoft Entra ID sign-in, and then you can continue with the Captive Portal configuration process.

Before you begin

You need to:

  • Have a Microsoft Entra ID account with administrator permissions (including Global Administrator, Cloud Application Administrator, Application Administrator, or owner of the Service Principal).
  • Sync Microsoft Entra ID with School Manager

 

Integrating Microsoft Entra ID sign-in with a Captive Portal

Connect your device to the network with a Linewize appliance.

You will only have to complete this process once.

  1. Go to School Manager > Configuration > Authentication > Captive Portal.
  2. Under Methods, enable Azure.
  3. Select Save.
  4. Go to login.linewize.net.
  5. Select Login to Network.
  6. Select Sign in with Azure AD.
  7. Sign in with your Microsoft Entra ID administrator account.
  8. The Permissions Requested window will appear. Select the Consent on behalf of your organization checkbox and then Accept.
  9. After successfully signing in, sign in to Microsoft Entra Admin Center with your Microsoft Entra ID administrator account.
  10. Go to Applications > Enterprise Applications.
  11. The Linewize Signin Application will be visible on your Enterprise Applications list, confirming that Microsoft Entra ID is correctly integrated.
  12. Continue with the Captive Portal configuration process.

 

Troubleshooting 

The “Permissions Requested” window doesn’t appear

If you encounter an issue where the permissions window does not appear:

  1. Sign in to Microsoft Entra Admin Center with your Microsoft Entra ID administrator account.
  2. Go to Applications > Enterprise Applications.
  3. Remove the Linewize Signin Application.

  4. Allow up to five minutes for the changes to take effect.
  5. Try signing into the Captive Portal again as outlined in Integrating Microsoft Entra ID sign-In with the Captive Portal.
  6. If the prompt still does not appear, manually edit the URL at the Microsoft Entra ID account selection screen.

Users see "Approval Required" on sign-in

This issue typically arises from the Microsoft Entra ID enterprise application permissions settings:

  1. Sign in to Microsoft Entra Admin Center with your Microsoft Entra ID administrator account.
  2. Go to Applications > Enterprise Applications.
  3. Ensure Linewize Signin Application has been correctly added to your organization.
  4. Adjust your settings to allow users to consent to applications as necessary.
