Getting a View Into a User’s Wellbeing
The User Journey Report is an aggregated view in Linewize Filter of a specific user’s User Timeline, Searches, Videos, and any Red Flags. The User Journey Report is intended to help school leadership and student wellbeing staff get a representative view of a user’s activity. It can be used to quickly check a student's digital well-being and track their improvement. The report can also help research incidents involving potentially risky or unacceptable online behavior.
The User Journey Report is available online via the User Dashboard and can be exported as PDF or CSV files for offline reference.
Viewing the User Journey Report
To view the User Journey report:
- Go to Statistics > Active Users.
- Search or select the student's username to open their dashboard.
- On the student’s dashboard, select User Journey.
Understanding Report Data
For the selected time period, the User Journey Report displays:

| D. Timestamp | The year, month, day and hour, minute, seconds when the connection was requested. |

A collection of applications and websites with a similar topic or use. You can ask Linewize Support for a PDF of the current Signatures and Categories. The list is constantly updated and you can suggest websites you feel are incorrectly categorized to Linewize Support. |
| G. Activity |
Indicates the websites or applications the user visited, the YouTube videos they watched, and the searches they completed in Google. Groups of related connection activities are rolled up by the HTML title (where available, otherwise by domain) and displayed in a row in the report. Note The title of the webpage users have visited will only be captured on computers running Linewize Connect for Chrome or Chromebook. |

Important
School leadership and wellness staff can work with IT support to identify which features can be enabled. School policies and the users' devices may limit the types of data you can gather. If you need additional assistance, contact Linewize Support.
Sorting to See the Patterns
The User Journey Report page displays the most recent activities first. You can sort any of the columns by selecting the column title. You can reverse the sort by selecting the column title again. Sort by a column to identify patterns you want to monitor.
Sorting is a good way to investigate a possible student behavioral or welfare issue with limited information. For example, a teacher observed that a student was off task and distracted by online content. The teacher asked you to review the students’ web activity during their class from 8:30 am to 9.20 am to understand what was so distracting. You can sort the User Journey data for that student and look at the web addresses and categories of content the student is accessing.
Your data will be in the order you see on the screen when you select Export.
Filtering the Report
You can filter the report using the Type and Result drop-down lists to get specific data sets.
Filter by:
- Type - Filters the report by the source of the activity. Check one or two of Search, Video, and Web activities. All records are displayed when none are checked or when all are checked.
- Category - Only displays the Categories in the current report. Type to search for a Category. Check one or more Categories.
- Verdict - Filters the activity for Allowed, Blocked, or Flagged activity.
A "+1" is displayed at the top of the selector once you check one or more options in a filter.
Exporting the User Journey Report
You can export the User Journey Report as a CSV or PDF document for offline reference. For best results, we recommend reports with a maximum of 4 weeks of information. You can select time periods as far back as three months from today or 10,000 records, whichever is reached first.
You can run reports for longer time periods, but you will need to allow several minutes, and your browser window must remain open until the report is complete.
Before you export, verify you have the smallest Date Range you need.
- Select from a preset date range or set a Custom Range by selecting the start and end dates.
- Select Apply.
- On the Journey Report page, select Export. The Export Journey Report dialog box will appear.
- Select an export type (PDF or CSV) from the drop-down.
- For larger datasets, we recommend selecting CSV (.csv) and then selecting Export to open the data in a spreadsheet.
- For smaller or more targeted datasets, we recommend using the PDF option. The Export downloads a PDF document with a cover page. Enter an optional comment on the Cover Page comment box (450 characters maximum, including punctuation and spaces).
Generate Reports Faster
We recommend setting the time period to two weeks or shorter. Reports that cover extended time periods generate bigger datasets that take longer to export. You may want to select a shorter time period. The maximum amount of data is 90 days or 10,000 activities based on whichever is reached first.
FAQ
What is the difference between the User Journey Report and Timeline reports?
The User Journey Report is better when you want to quickly get an overview of a user’s activity, especially what’s been blocked or flagged, or share that information with others. The Report categorizes the user’s traffic and groups the activities into 15-minute summaries. This makes it easier to see related web activities and filter by Type, Category, or Result (Allowed, Blocked, Flagged).
The Timeline is better when you need to deeply dive into what a user was doing online during a short period (no more than 24 hours at once). It’s a detailed but ungrouped report of all traffic to and from the user’s device(s) and how it was handled, including:
- Technical details about the user’s device
- Technical details about the connection
- Detailed filtering verdict information
- Any use of bypass codes

What is the difference between a User Journey Report and a Student Journey Report?
The User Journey Report is the fully featured version of the Report available through Linewize Filter. The Student Journey Report is a limited version of the User Journey report that can be made available to teachers through Classwize. Where school leadership and wellbeing staff can use the User Journey Report to report on all users at a school, which may include teachers and support staff, the Student Journey Report only provides information to teachers on students in their classes and during set time periods. How does the User Journey Report gather information?
The report gathers data from your Linewize Filter Appliance and user devices with the installed Linewize Connect extension or agent.
If your school has enabled 24/7 filtering, more details are gathered while connected to the school network than when the device is at home. Your version of Linewize Connect and allowed device configurations affect how much detail is gathered from devices while they are off the network.
Does the User Journey Report show if the student has viewed videos on an application?
The User Journey Report shows if the student has viewed or searched for videos only on YouTube. While it indicates that a student has connected (or opened) other streaming websites, it does not provide data on the student’s searching and viewing activities within those sites and instead uses webpage titles in the report. Why can’t I view the User Journey Report for one of my students?
Ask your IT support to check your account permissions. If you have the Reporting/Pastoral Care permission, you can only access the reports for the students who are assigned to you. If you think you have been given the incorrect permissions or a student has yet to be assigned to you, speak to your IT support. See Permissions in Linewize Filter.
