If your school has a Linewize appliance, you can set up Linewize Connect to function differently when a device is connected (On Network) or not connected (Off Network) to the School Manager Network. Configuring these settings can give you access to additional School Manager and Classwize features.
Important
If your school uses Cloud Filtering, you must configure the Off School Manager Network settings.
If your school has Linewize Connect deployed to your user’s devices, you can configure On School Manager Network and Off School Manager Network settings for:
- Filtering
- Classwize
- DNS Filtering
Filtering
Turning filtering on will allow Linewize Connect to apply your school’s filtering policies rather than using the School Manager appliance to filter users’ devices. You must configure a Filtering Mode to use filtering features through Connect. Turning on Filtering will give you access to Man in the Middle (MITM) features and Safe Search (on Chromebooks only).
Filtering Modes
Linewize Connect can use different ways to filter and report on your users' Internet usage and give you access to more Linewize features. Choosing the best Filtering Mode for your school's infrastructure and device types will give you and your users the best experience.
Tip
Check what kind of Filtering Mode your school is using before making changes.
Man in the Middle (MITM)
Important
Due to the technology used in browser extensions, MITM is always on for the Connect Browser Extension. Unchecking MITM does not turn off search and video inspection in the Chrome extension.
Linewize Connect’s MITM feature inspects internet traffic to:
- View Bing, Google and YouTube search keywords.
- Inspect and monitor YouTube content.
- See search and video content risk indicators.
- Get real-time alerts or weekly reports by email for risk indicators.
- Limit users’ access to personal Gmail, Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID, or Outlook accounts for macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Chrome and Windows devices in Companion Mode.
- Filter the internet using custom lists of websites or keywords.
Safe Search (Chromebooks only)
Important
The Safe Search setting on the Mobile Agents page is only for Chromebook devices. Check if you can enforce Safe Search on your school’s devices.
Turning on Safe Search for Chromebooks allows Connect for Chrome - Education to hide explicit content from Google search, Bing, and YouTube search results for users on their school Google account.
Classwize
If your school uses Classwize, select Classroom enabled to let your teachers use classroom management features.
DNS Filtering
Important
The DNS Filtering section applies only to devices running Connect on Windows, macOS, and iOS/iPadOS.
If School Manager filtering conflicts with other internal services or systems, use this section to configure Bypass Domains with a root domain or subdomain.
