As part of our ongoing effort to improve our products, we will be changing our current School Manager Category Hierarchy to streamline its structure. Linewize will automatically update your policies impacted by the Categorization Structure change. This change will not affect Objects or Object Pools, and you will not need to make any changes.
What is changing?
The first significant change is to the terminology around the Category Hierarchy. Currently, our hierarchy consists of:
- Top-level Categories
This hierarchy will change to:
We will also be consolidating 12 top-level categories into ten themes.
|Current Top-Level Categories||New Themes|
|Business and Government||Business and Government|
|Information and Reference||
Information and Reference
|Recreation and Hobbies|
|Career and Education|
|Entertainment||Arts and Entertainment|
|Malware||Malware and Hacking|
|Offensive||Mature and Explicit|
|People and Society||People and Society|
|Shopping and Travel||Shopping and Travel|
|Internet and Telecom||Web and Infrastructure|
|Social Media and Communication|
The second significant change involves our Categories (previously called subcategories). We will merge several categories and deprecate a select few. The following table displays all the categories we will merge together:
|Current Subcategory||Merged Category|
|Libraries and Museums||
Museums and Culture
|Computing and Electronics||
Computing and Electronics
|Phishing and Other Frauds||
Malware and Phishing
|Spyware and Adware|
Alcohol and Tobacco
|VOIP and Messaging||
Messaging and Conferencing
We will remove the following categories and replace them with substituted categories. If you have these categories as part of any filtering policies in School Manager, we will replace them with the substitute category.
|Removed Category||Substitute Category|
|Arts and Crafts||Recreation and Hobbies|
|Web File Sharing||File Sharing|
When will these changes happen?
These changes will take effect starting in December 2023. The Linewize Team will actively manage this change. You do not need to take any action for these changes to take effect. If you notice anything out of place or specific filtering policies are not working, please contact Linewize Support for further assistance.
